Flat Tire Fairy
We drove to Canandaigua and Kershaw Park on the lake. I had mapped out a bike route of about 50 miles, down towards Naples and back, incorporating much of the Wanderer route from the September Highlander cycle tour. We added a 10 mile loop south of Bristol.
This was a beautiful route along the west side of Canandaigua Lake with great views, especially after a few of the long (1-2 mile) climbs. We stopped at a scenic vista overlook on County Route 12, after one torturous climb of two miles and more than 700' of elevation gain. We could see the entire lake below us. In the distance, somewhere far, far away, was the northern end of the lake and Kershaw Park. A scant 25 more miles to ride.
At the intersection of rt. 64 and County rt 32 we took a food break at a convenience store. Seems our favorite refueling snacks now are Hostess fruit pies and gatorade, lots of sugar and we can pretend it's healthy.
Crossing the intersection onto rt 32 we hit another long hill, a 300'+ climb in .75miles. We finally got back to West Lake rd. and with 6 miles to go, when Jan yelled about having a flat tire.
The flat tire fairy had abandoned us. Our first time and the rear tire, of course. Jan got it changed, with a little help from me, and we continued for, oh, another mile. Another flat. Same wheel. No more spares. What to do?
Well, I continued riding back to the van and Jan began walking. After a couple of miles I wondered why I was still holding her tire tube. Shortly after I wondered why I was biking and she was walking? Should have put her on my bike, who cares if the seat is too high? I don't need this, I'm a runner.
Finally get the van, drive back, pick her up and take off back to Kershaw Park. Jan joins the RATS swim group in the lake and gets a half hour swim in.
Pretty good workout day despite the flats.
